Spending Addict-In-Chief: ‘We Don’t Have A Spending Problem’

64905_10151218159058657_352935152_n

Denial…the mantra of every addict.

Ben Shapiro reports at Breitbart:

In an interview with Stephen Moore of the Wall Street Journal, newly re-elected House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) opened up about President Obama’s utter unwillingness to cut a single dollar from federal spending. In a stunning admission, Obama reportedly told Boehner, “We don’t have a spending problem.”

Boehner added that President Obama continues to maintain that America’s federal deficit is caused not by governmental overspending but by “a health-care problem.” Said Boehner, “They blame all of the fiscal woes on our health-care system.” Boehner told Obama, “Clearly we have a health-care problem, which is about to get worse with Obamacare. But, Mr. President, we have a very serious spending problem.” Obama eventually replied, “I’m getting tired of hearing you say that.”

Obama may be tired of hearing Boehner talk about a spending problem, particularly when Obama has been re-elected on the basis of ignoring government spending. Nonetheless, America does have a spending problem, which Obama is steadfastly ignoring. “He’s so ideological himself,” Boehner explained, “and he’s unwilling to take on the left of his own party.” That’s why Obama refused to raise the retirement age for Medicare after agreeing to it. “He admitted in meetings that he couldn’t sell things to his own members,” said Boehner. “But he didn’t even want to try … We could never get him to step up.”

Congress Re-elects Spineless Boehner For House Speaker

Kevin Lamarque/Reuters

The GOP just re-elected their pet chihuahua to go up against a pit bull. And they wonder why they keep getting eaten alive.

Newsmax reports:

The House and Senate ushered in a new Congress on Thursday, re-electing embattled Republican John Boehner speaker and hailing one of its own senators who returned a year after being felled by a stroke.

The 113th Congress convened at noon, the constitutionally mandated time, with pomp, pageantry and politics, on both sides of the Capitol.

Boehner, bruised after weeks with his fractious caucus and negotiations with the White House on the fiscal cliff, won a second, two-year term as leader with 220 votes. Despite grumbling in the GOP ranks, just 10 Republicans voted for someone other than Boehner.

According to Human Events, there were some serious intimidation tactics going on to assure his re-election:

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-Kan.) told Human Events after the vote that “arm twisting” on Boehner’s behalf was “very intense” with threats that Republicans would lose plum committee assignments or campaign donations from the National Republican Congressional Committee if they opposed the speaker’s reelection.

Huelskamp is one of four Republican lawmakers who lost key committee assignments recently for reportedly voting against issues that were important to Boehner.

“The intimidation and pressure was intense, there are a lot of people that wanted to vote no and today, the last call, the last twisting of arms, convinced them not to do that,” Huelskamp said.

“And certainly my vote was one of no confidence. I want conservative leadership, and that has not been provided by the speaker,” Huelskamp said.

Asked specifically who was intimidated to cast their votes for Boehner, Huelskamp declined to name names.

Huelskamp did add that one freshman lawmaker was called prior to the vote and told their committee seat was “probably gone if you vote your conscience.”

Ben Shapiro calls it Boehner’s “second chance“:

This is John Boehner’s opportunity to stand up for what he always should have stood up for: cuts without tax increases, a thriving economy without blow-off-the-doors debt. He remained the Speaker because Republicans decided to entrust him with that mission. There is no room to budge. There is no room for compromise. The time for that passed after Republicans compromised, and President Obama promptly spat in their faces – and in the faces of generations yet to be born.

Unfortunately, Boehner’s track record has made it clear that he doesn’t truly understand the stakes, and is more willing to stand firm against the Tea Party than Obama’s agenda.

Even so, I went ahead and tweeted @SpeakerBoehner: For the love of God and country, GROW A SPINE!

My kids are being sold into debt slavery, and YOUR party is supposed to put a stop to it! Do it, dammit!

Let’s hope he’s listening!

Conservatives Move To Unseat Boehner

boehner_eyebrow_ap

This is LONG overdue!

Matthew Boyle reports at Breitbart:

Several conservative House Republican members are contemplating a plan to unseat Speaker John Boehner from his position on January 3, Breitbart News has exclusively learned. Staffers have compiled a detailed action plan that, if executed, could make this a reality.  [...]

The circulated plan is a comprehensive multi-step process.

According to the plan as drafted, the first step is to re-establish the election of the Speaker of the House by secret ballot, rather than by a public roll call vote. That’s because the members who would oppose Boehner, if there ended up not being enough votes to achieve their desired result or if Boehner scared via threat or coaxed via prize some of the opposition into voting for him, would be sitting ducks for retaliation in the near future.

As one hill staffer considering this path told Breitbart News, the members involved in an unsuccessful coup d’etat would be “toast.”

[...]  If a secret ballot election for House Speaker is established, step one of this plan against Boehner is complete.

The second step of the circulated plan would require enough GOP members to band together and vote for somebody other than Boehner as Speaker. Since Illinois Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., has resigned his position, there will be 434 voting members on January 3. For someone to win the Speaker election, they’d need to secure 217 votes – or a majority of everyone voting.

Since there are 233 Republicans heading into the next Congress, only 17 Republicans would be needed to unseat Boehner. The House would continue having multiple elections throughout the day on January 3 until it agreed upon a new Speaker.

Fiscal Cliff: House Votes To Revise Spending Cuts, Puts Off ‘Plan B’ Vote Until After Christmas

boehner-plan-c-harsanyi-fiscal-cliff-620x429

Even if this had passed, Reid would never have allowed it to come up for a vote in the Senate, and Obama had promised to veto it.

NO MORE NEGOTIATIONS.  Make the Democrats OWN THE CONSEQUENCES!

Audrey Hudson reports at Human Events:

A defection of conservative Republicans forced House Speaker John Boehner to abandon his final-hour plan to block automatic tax increases, leaving taxpayers hanging on the edge of the fiscal cliff that is scheduled to crumble on Jan. 1.

“The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass,” Boehner said in statement Thursday night after cancelling the vote and sending members home for the Christmas holiday.

“Now it is up to the president to work with Sen. (Harry) Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff,” Boehner said.

The collapse was announced shortly after an emergency GOP conference was called at 7:45 p.m. to count votes and twist arms, just moments before the legislation was to be debated on the House floor.

The bill is referred to as “Plan B” and would have averted an automatic tax increase for families making less than $1 million a year but raised tax rates for those making more than $1 million.

A second bill to block military and domestic spending cuts that are part of sequestration narrowly passed Thursday on a vote of 215 to 209 with no Democratic support and 21 Republicans voting no.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said the “Plan B” bill would have been dead on arrival in the upper chamber. The plan was offered by Boehner (R-Ohio) after failed negotiations with President Barack Obama to avert the tax hikes and spending cuts.

Without a deal, taxes are on autopilot to increase $4.6 trillion over the next decade along with $1.2 trillion in cuts across the board.

It’s Time To Fire John Boehner

Long overdue.  Should have done it after last summer’s debt ceiling debacle.  It’s been obvious for a long time that he only has the spine to fight against true conservatives in his own party, not against Obama and his dangerous leftist agenda.

Alexis Levinson reports:

The backlash against Speaker of the House John Boehner’s removal of several conservative members of Congress from committees continued Wednesday, with one conservative group calling for Republicans to “depose” Boehner from his speakership.

American Majority Action (AMA) is launching a #FireBoehner campaign. If 16 members of the Republican Party abstain from voting for Boehner as speaker in January, he will be one vote shy of the 218 necessary to confirm his speakership.

“Speaker Boehner has been an abysmal failure as speaker, and his latest purge is the nail in the coffin for conservatives,” said Ned Ryun, president and CEO of AMA. “Boehner has never won a negation [sic] battle with the White House or Senate — and he’s been nothing short of an embarrassing spokesman for the conservative movement. It’s time for him to go.”

Read more at the Daily Caller

Ned Ryun advises at Red State:

The House rules demand that a Speaker receive a majority—218 votes—to be elected speaker. If no nominee for speaker receives 218, the House remains speakerless—as it did during parts of the Civil War.

If 16 House Republicans were to abstain from voting for Speaker, Boehner would only receive 217 votes.

Once we depose Boehner and cause a firestorm, the Republican caucus will get the memo: Pick someone else! These 16 Republicans only need to hold out until the caucus chooses a new leader.

[...]  Republicans and conservatives deserve a more articulate, more conservative leader. In fact, we need one if we want to keep the House majority and take the Senate. Boehner has been Obama’s punching bag and has lost every public battle with the President. Now, he’s waging an internal war on conservatives.

Boehner Threatening More Conservatives If They Don’t Vote In Lockstep With GOP Compromise Agenda

This is out of control.  He needs to be gone…yesterday.

Tony Lee writes at Breitbart:

After purging four conservative House members from key Committees, House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) threatened Republican members of Congress on Wednesday by telling them Republican leaders are “watching” their votes to determine future committee assignments.

Boehner’s remarks are a sign that the moderate House Republican leadership will be less tolerant of conservative dissent.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), who was removed from the Budget Committee, said Boehner warned those in his conference that “there may be more folks that will be targeted” and the Republican leadership is “watching all of your votes.”

“It was a message to the Republican Conference in general, especially the comment today that there may be more punishment coming if you don’t vote the right way,” Huelskamp told The Hill.

Matthew Boyle reports:

It’s unclear what criteria Boehner and GOP leadership plan to use in the weeks and months ahead. Boehner spokesman Michael Steel wouldn’t provide specifics on what criteria or votes on which the Speaker is “watching” conservative Republicans. Instead, when asked, Steel provided Breitbart News with the exact quote another Boehner spokesman gave two nights ago for a response to a completely different question. “The Steering Committee makes decisions based on a range of factors,” Steel said.

Huelskamp is one of the four conservatives purged from committee assignments from which he would be able to affect fiscal policy. He was pulled from the House Budget Committee and House Agriculture Committee. Michigan Republican Rep. Justin Amash was pulled from the Budget Committee too, and Reps. David Schweikert of Arizona and Walter Jones of North Carolina were removed from the House Financial Services Committee.

Huelskamp also addressed the GOP caucus on Wednesday and said he received “warm reception from some and silence from others.” He asked GOP leadership to publicly provide “that list of votes used in the Steering Committee to reward or punish members.

Boehner Declares War On Tea Party, Purges Fiscal Conservatives From House Committees

It appears John Boehner doesn’t want fiscal conservatives anywhere near positions of power where they can challenge his compromises with the enemy.

Francesca Chambers reports at Red Alert Politics:

The fissure between the GOP establishment and Tea Party members in Congress blew wide open Monday evening when conservative members of Congress were suddenly removed from House financial committees.

RedState’s Erick Erickson was the first reliable source to share that conservatives were reportedly being removed from the House’s finance related committees by Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio).

Shortly after, Roll Call reported that Rep. David Schweikert of Arizona had been removed from from the Financial Services Committee “for bucking the party line too often.”

“This morning Congressman Schweikert learned there was a price to be paid for voting based on principle. That price was the removal from the House Financial Services Committee,” Rachel Semmel, Schweikert’s spokesman, told POLITICO. “We are obviously disappointed that Leadership chose to take this course, but Rep. Schweikert remains committed to fighting for the conservative principles that brought him here.”

The backlash has been swift and fierce:

Conservative Republican Reps. Tim Huelskamp of Kansas and Justin Amash of Michigan hit back at Republican leadership on Tuesday, following their Monday removal from prominent committees, calling the move “petty” and “vindictive,” and accusing Speaker of the House John Boehner and his deputies of silencing independent conservative voices in preparation to steamroll a tax hike through Congress.

Huelskamp — who was removed from the Agriculture and Budget Committees — released a video on Friday declaring his intention to not vote for any tax increases and received notice of his removal on Monday, “one business day” later.

“I think there’s going to be an attempt to pass a tax increase through the House, in exchange for what?” he told a group of reporters at the Heritage Foundation Tuesday afternoon. “This president doesn’t want to do entitlement reform, doesn’t want to cut spending… I think it makes very clear to conservatives that you’re about to get run over.”

[...]  The decision to boot them from the committee, Huelskamp told reporters, “confirms most Americans’ deepest suspicions about Washington: It’s petty, it’s vindictive, and if you have any conservative principles, you will be punished… No good deed goes unpunished.”

“My constituents didn’t send me to vote for him [President Barack Obama] and they didn’t send me to vote for [Senate Majority Leader Harry] Reid or Mr. Boehner,” Huelskamp said.

Amash said that he had not even been informed of the decision yet, and only heard about it from the media.

“We haven’t even been told officially that we were removed from the Budget Committee,” Amash told reporters. “I had to read it in the newspaper… I haven’t received a single call from leadership, a single email… I think it’s pretty outrageous, frankly.”

Breitbart reports:

FreedomWorks president Matt Kibbe bashed the move, too, saying in a statement that “[t]his is a clear attempt on the part of Republican leadership to punish those in Washington who vote the way they promised their constituents they would – on principle – instead of mindlessly rubber-stamping trillion dollar deficits and the bankrupting of America. This is establishment thinking, circling the wagons around yes-men and punishing anyone that dares to take a stand for good public policy.”

Rep. Jim Jordan is also condemning the move:

Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, the chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, responded harshly to House Speaker John Boehner’s purge of conservative Republicans from powerful House committees. Jordan suggests Boehner’s moves could damage the Republican Party.

“It’s unfortunate and unhealthy for our party that principled conservatives are being punished for voting their consciences and keeping the promises they made to their constituents,” Jordan told Breitbart News.

Doug Ross remarks:

Complete classlessness. As Jimmie Bise, Jr. observes:

This sort of move — summary dismissal from important committees for which you leak to the press before you notify the affected members — is a big, fat backhand to the face, a reminder that John Boehner is in charge of the GOP House caucus and not we upstart conservative Tea Partiers… It’s what happens when a besieged leader wants to secure his position to hold off a siege. Make no mistake, conservatives have gotten very close to positions of real influence inside the ranks of the professional Republicans and that just won’t do. And so, a purge of the problem children who believe conservatism is more than a suit you put on to gull the rubes during an election year.

Here’s my advice: Don’t give a single penny to any official Republican organization. Not a cent to the RNC. Not a nickel to the NRSC. Not a dime to the NRCC. Not a quarter to Karl Rove’s idiotic “grassroots” fund, American Crossroads.

Instead, give your money and support to conservative candidates directly and to organizations proven to support conservative principles like Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund.

Boehner Folds: ‘Obamacare is the Law of the Land’

The votes aren’t even done being counted, but House Speaker John Boehner has already thrown conservatives under the bus, declaring that he will no longer attempt to repeal Obamacare:

View on YouTube

With control of congress and the purse strings, Boehner could lead the fight to simply defund and starve the beast.   But no, he insists on being the enabler who wags a finger at the president’s power grabs and spending addiction, but caves and gives him the money for his next fix, anyway.

Daniel Horowitz at Red State responds to Boehner’s admonition that Obamacare is now “the law of the land”:

No, Mr. Boehner, the Constitution is the law of the Republic.

In April 2011, following the failure of Republicans to defund Obamacare during the first budget battle, I wrote the following at Red State:

If it is reckless to shut down the government over Obamacare, then there is nothing in the budget worth fighting for.  Due to the degree of entrenchment of the existing entitlement, even Paul Ryan’s plan will not balance the budget for another 26 years.  If Obamacare is not defunded within the next year, it will be virtually impossible to completely repeal and will make a balanced budget an impossibility.

Well, they said all along that we’d wait until 2012. They were sure we’d win the election.  Ironically, by running away from the Obamacare issue, they ensured that we would not win the election.  Now that they lost, they say tough luck on Obamacare.

Yes, I know what you’re thinking: “if we create gridlock over Obamacare, we will…..”  We will what?  We will risk political reprisal?  Then what are we fighting for in the first place?  If we are unwilling to fight the implementation of a 4th entitlement program, how will we ever have the moxie to fix the existing ones?

[...]  This is it, folks.  If we are unwilling to engage in a fight to the death of Obamacare, there is nothing worth fighting for.  And frankly, there will be nothing to fight for.

Read more at Red State

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air thinks Boehner is simply being pragmatic:

This isn’t a tactical decision.  It’s reality.  The ACA is not a static law; most of its provisions will go into effect in the next two years, and after that repeal will be immensely difficult, thanks to its transformational nature in relation to the insurance and health-provider industries.  It’s going to be too late to “pull this weed up by its roots” by 2017, the next possible spot on the calendar to do so.  By then, we will have to offer a second round of transformation that starts in the context of ObamaCare., and hope we have a Republican President and Republican majorities to even get that process under way.

We had only two ways to stop ObamaCare.  Either we needed a new President with Republican majorities in both chambers of Congress, or veto-proof supermajorities in both chambers of Congress.  Voters didn’t provide John Boehner with either option.  When we say that elections have consequences, this is exactly what we mean.

Mark Levin has it right:

“He’s not a conservative.  He blurts out platitudes but he doesn’t give a damn.  He’s ready to deal…Obama hasn’t said a damn thing publicly and already Boehner’s negotiating with himself – throwing out one principle after another.”

[...]  Levin suggested the Obama circle is laughing at Boehner.  Speaking as an Obama adviser, Levin said, “Look at Boehner, he’s wetting himself.  We’re waiting for him to cry, to get on his knees and beg for a deal.  He’s going to sell out his party; he’s going to sell out his principles.”  “They are in complete surrender mode.”

“This party better change, or I’m getting out,” Levin stated.

Boehner also declared that “we don’t have a Tea Party Caucus,” and said that he’s willing to consider new “revenue” (read: tax hikes) under “the right conditions.”

Hey Boehner, don’t you at least wanna haggle for a higher price before you bend over?   It’s time for a speaker with a spine!

“Speaker Paul Ryan” has a nice ring to it.   Ryan has the backbone to stand up against Obama on his out-of-control spending spree, unlike Boehner, who’s already offering to compromise.

Congress Empowers President To Make Appointments Without Senate Confirmation

Congress just gave the Executive Branch the power to fill over 3000 positions with no confirmation hearings or oversight from the Senate.  What on earth possessed the Republican-controlled House to go along with this scheme?

Fox News reports:

The House gave final congressional approval Tuesday to a bill that would save the slow-paced Senate some time by eliminating the need for confirming nominees to some 170 executive branch jobs and 3,000 military officer positions.

The vote for this rare instance of streamlining Senate procedures was 261-116. The bill goes to the White House for President Barack Obama’s signature.

The bill also establishes a five-year term for the nation’s census director, to ensure that the position is separated from politics and the election-year calendar. In 2010, there was no director in place for that year’s census until months before the count started. In 1990, it was one week before the count. The position still would require Senate confirmation.

At the start of the Obama administration, there were 1,215 executive branch positions that required Senate confirmation. President John F. Kennedy, elected in 1960, had only 286 positions to fill but the number had jumped to 914 by the end of the Clinton administration in January 2001.

Read more at Fox News

If the complaint is that the president has too many offices to fill for the senate to confirm them in a timely manner, I have the perfect solution: ELIMINATE ALL THESE BUREAUCRATIC POSITIONS!    Our country ran smoothly for over 200 years without all these busybodies in D.C.  gobbling up taxpayer money to run our lives.

The solution is NOT to empower the Executive Branch with near dictatorial powers.   The solution is to go back to the constitution and get rid of every department, agency and program that doesn’t fall under the limited, enumerated powers therein!   Do that, and the senate will have no problem confirming the 5% of presidential appointees that actually have constitutional legitimacy.

Boehner: House Will Repeal All of Obamacare If Court Doesn’t

This is why we HAVE to take back the majority in both the Senate and the House in 2012!

Newsmax reports:

House Speaker John Boehner said the Republican-led chamber will move to repeal President Barack Obama’s health-care overhaul law if the U.S. Supreme Court doesn’t strike it down.

“Unless the Supreme Court throws out the entire Obamacare bill, the House will move to repeal all of it,” Boehner, an Ohio Republican, told reporters in Washington today.

The Supreme Court is expected to rule by the end of this month on the health-care law, passed by a Democratic-led Congress in 2010. The court heard arguments on the case in March.

The House voted to repeal the health-care law in January 2011 soon after Republicans took control of the chamber. The measure didn’t advance in the majority-Democratic Senate.

Boehner didn’t say when the House would act. He said it would take a “step-by-step” approach to rewrite the healthcare law to reduce costs and “ensure that the American people go to the doctor of their choice.” Republicans haven’t offered details on what they would do to replace the law.

Illegal Appointee Richard Cordray Begins Regulatory Assault On Banking, Lending

His appointment was blatantly unconstitutional, but that isn’t stopping Richard Cordray from getting to work on a massive government takeover of what’s left of the banking and lending industry.

Capitol Confidential reports at Big Government:

President’s appointment of liberal former Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray to head the powerful Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was a direct assault on the Constitution and the law causing constitutional scholar Jonathan Turley to remark that President Obama has surpassed Richard Nixon in “the development of an imperial presidency of unchecked executive powers.”

Cordray is well aware that the Constitution provides the president with the power of appointment when the Congress is not in session.  But the Congress was not in recess when the President appointed Cordray.  Adding insult to injury, the 2010 law that created the CFPB included a section that says many of the bureau’s new powers are to be held by the secretary of the Treasury “until the Director of the Bureau is confirmed by the Senate.”  The Senate, obviously, never confirmed Cordray.

Despite these constitutional and legal roadblocks, Cordray has assumed the full power of the office and has started the process of regulating the economy in earnest.

In Birmingham, Alabama, Cordray held a field hearing laying the groundwork for a regulatory assault on the short-term lending industry, as well as, the mortgage and student loan industry.  Cordray seems unconcerned of the constitutional and legal challenges ahead.  He told the Hill newspaper, “I’m going to leave that to others … lawyers are digging into it,” when asked if his appointment would survive a legal challenge.  But he added that “the position was long overdue to be filled.” “We’ve got a lot of work to do for the public to make these markets function effectively,” he said.

Cordray, in a few sentences was able to articulate the president’s view of the Constitution and the economy.

With regard to the Constitution, Cordray is ill-concerned about whether his appointment is violative.  The man who swore an oath to the Constitution will “leave that to others.”  The fact that liberals felt the need to fill this new position is good enough.  With regard to the economy, they believe that only government intervention can allow markets to “function effectively.”

This thinking turns 236 years of American precedent on its head.  America was built upon a foundation of laws and freedom.  In one fell swoop, the president found the need to destroy both.  We are confident that a court will find that Cordray assumed office illegally and his actions will be nullified.  We hope that day comes sooner than later.

House Republicans File Resolution Criticizing Recess Picks

Humberto Sanchez reports at Roll Call:

Rep. Diane Black (Tenn.) and 71 other House Republicans introduced a nonbinding resolution today voicing concern over President Barack Obama’s recess appointment of four administration nominees last week.

That’s it?

We’re talking about a direct assault on the separation of powers, the congress, and the constitution, and the most they can come up with is a “non-binding resolution?”

“It’s astounding to me that the president is claiming these are recess appointments and within his authority, when Congress was not in fact in recess,” Black said. “These appointments are an affront to the Constitution. No matter how you look at this, it doesn’t pass the smell test. I hope the House considers my resolution as soon as we return to Washington so we can send a message to President Obama.”

You know what would REALLY send him a message?  IMPEACHING HIM for breaking the law and violating his oath to uphold the constitution.

The resolution would express the sense of the House that the president misused his authority in making four recent recess appointments.

I can hear the Dictator-in-Chief quaking in his boots now.

Left’s Dreams of an Imperial Presidency Are Being Realized

The Democrats have been pushing for Obama to become a benevolent dictator and push their agenda by sidestepping congress altogether.

Be careful what you wish for.

Andrew C. McCarthy warns at the National Review:

President Obama has fulfilled a second Tom Friedman fantasy — the first being that he is, in fact, PresidentObama. “I have fantasized… that, what if we could just be China for a day,” the New York Times star columnist gushed for his ponderous fellow travelers on Meet the Press. “I mean where we could actually, you know, authorize the right solutions.”

It was May 2010, not long after Obama and a Congress dominated by Democrats had rammed through Obamacare, the most sweeping government usurpation of private industry and individual liberty in American history. Soon they’d be adding Dodd-Frank’s paralyzing intrusion into the financial sector. Yet, despite the shock and awe of hope and change, here was the Progressive Poobah, grousing that “my democracy” was failing “to work with the same authority, focus and stick-to-itiveness” as a totalitarian Communist dictatorship. After all, unburdened by our remnants of free-market competition, by the gridlock and sausage-making of two-party politics, the Chicoms produce trade and budget surpluses, state-of-the-art airports, and enviro-friendly high-speed rail. All we can manage, “on everything from the economy to environment,” Friedman complained, are “suboptimal solutions” — apparently not to be confused with the optimal Chinese menu of forced abortions, religious repression, secret police, kangaroo courts, and air you could cut with a chopstick.

Friedman is surely smiling today. So, we can assume, are other leftists, such as Peter Orszag, Obama’s former budget-overrun director, and Bev Perdue, the governor of North Carolina. Right after the midterm shellacking that swept Republicans into control of the House — a roadblock that has stymied some, but by no means all, of Obama’s transformational agenda — they said aloud what other Democrats were thinking: America’s problem is too much democracy. This week, the president solved that problem, shoving another page of the suboptimal Constitution through his made-in-China shredder.

In sum, Obama dissolved the separation of powers, the framers’ ingenious bulwark against any government branch’s seizure of supreme power — and thus the Constitution’s bulwark against tyranny. The president claims the power to appoint federal officers without the Senate’s constitutionally mandated advice and consent. He does so by claiming unilateral powers to dictate when the Senate is in session, a power the Constitution assigns to Congress, and to decree that an ongoing session is actually a recess. This sheer ukase, he says, triggers the part of the Constitution we’re keeping because he likes it — viz., the executive power to fill vacancies without any vetting by the people’s representatives.

Mind you, a president is the only government official constitutionally required to swear that he will “preserve, protect and defend” that Constitution. We are talking here not just about Obama’s characteristically breathtaking arrogance. These are profound violations of his oath and of our fundamental law. But rest assured he will get away with them. For that, Republicans can thank themselves and their surrender to statism.

Obama Escalates Appointments Crisis, Claims Cordray Has Full Powers Without Senate Approval

At this point I think he’s daring congress to impeach him, so he can play “martyr of the middle class” (liberals love a victim story) and exploit it for his re-election campaign.

Neil Munro writes at the Daily Caller:

President Barack Obama today escalated his claimed power to appoint top officials by announcing that his financial-sector appointee also has authority that is legally reserved only for an official who has been confirmed by the Senate.

The 2010 law that established the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau includes a section that says many of the bureau’s new powers are to be held by the secretary of the Treasury “until the Director of the Bureau is confirmed by the Senate.”

Obam’s Jan. 3. claim to have appointed Cordray appears to violate the Constitution and is a grab for increased presidential power, say many constitutional lawyers.

But his new Jan. 6 claim about Cordray’s powers goes even further by contradicting the plain language of the 2010 law that created the bureau.

Section 1066 of the law says many of the bureau’s new powers are activated once the Senate confirms a director. Those extra powers include the authority to write regulations for non-bank firms, such as payday lenders.

Obama also said Friday that Cordray’s new authority include those powers.

“Now that Richard [Cordray] is your director, you can finally exercise the full power that this agency has been given to protect consumers under the law,” Obama said in a Dec. 6 visit to the CFPB.

“Now that he’s here, irresponsible debt collectors and payday lenders, independent mortgage services and loan providers, they’re all bound by the same rules as everyone else.”

Obama’s declarations have “now escalated to arrogance on steroids,” said Roger Pilon, the founder and director of the Cato Institute’s constitutional studies center. Congress makes laws and the White House executes them, said Pilon, and Obama’s constitutional and legal claims “are a direct attack on the [Constitution’s] separation of powers principle.”

The Constitution, he said, curbs the president’s power by requiring him to win Senate approval for his top appointments. That, he said, “is a check on unbridled executive power.”

White House officials declined to answer The Daily Caller’s question about Obama’s claim to have confirmed — and not just recess-appointed — Cordray.

Dictator-in-Chief: Obama’s Mask is Off

The mask is off, and so are the gloves.

Obama and his Leftist supporters see their window of opportunity to finally dispense with our constitutional republic and permanently install a ruling class that will “fundamentally transform” the country we love into their Socialist Utopia.  They can almost see the finish line.

If this were a military rather than political operation, people would already be recognizing it for the coup that it is.

Steve McCann warns at American Thinker:

The mask is fully off.  Barack Obama is the most corrupt, power-mad president in this nation’s illustrious history.  By his actions in bypassing Congress and making appointments that should be subject to Senate approval while the Senate is still in session and innumerable extra-constitutional actions since he became president, he is following in the footsteps of the despots who dominated the 20th century.

In late September of 2008, it became clear to me that Barack Obama would be elected president.  Based on his background, education, motivation, and indoctrination, I saw a man who could single-handedly destroy the country and someone with no respect for the history, the Constitution, or the people of the United States.  The specter of a megalomaniac who was a stranger to the truth and would or say or do anything to achieve or retain power overcame me.  In Barack Obama and his fellow travelers, I saw what I feared the most since I came to this country: a person and a political mindset that would, if allowed, spell the end of the noblest experiment in the history of mankind.

It was at that point that I wrote my first article for American Thinker in an attempt to warn the people of America that the result of the 2008 election would be critical to the nation’s survival.  This was the first column I had written since my college days over 40+ years before, and I am eternally grateful to AT for publishing it and giving me a forum to speak to the American people.

I had to survive a war that was precipitated by those who were initially elected by the people in a democratic fashion.  Yet once in power, they began to systematically usurp and overthrow the rule of law.  Their lust for power led them to shred any written constitution or traditions as they systematically imposed new regulations, laws, and executive orders geared primarily to centralize authority in the government as individual rights and liberties were extinguished.  In due course, they and their cronies became the government, as the people were powerless to stop them.

The people of Germany, the most advanced society in continental Europe, or Italy in the first four years of the 1930s, would have found it incredible to imagine what became of those countries by 1945.  They would not think it even remotely possible.

The history of the United States and its traditions of liberty and individual freedom should be a bulwark against the successful emergence of people like Obama and his cronies.  Yet why are the media, or the opposition party, or the members of Congress or the judiciary not shouting from the highest hilltop and taking action to stop these power-grabs?  Has this country enjoyed peace and prosperity so long that everyone is jaded and preoccupied with him- or herself, or in a self-induced stupor either ignoring what’s happening or saying that these unconstitutional steps are minor?  Is it because Obama happens to have black skin and everyone is too intimidated by political correctness to speak?  Or is it as it was in Germany, Italy, and Russia among many — a belief that the worst could never happen here?

I have seen and experienced the worst that man can offer, I am not intimidated, and I will say without reservation that Barack Obama and his cronies have the same mindset in their tactical approach, philosophy, and lust for power that was extant in Benito Mussolini and the Fascists in the early days of their regime.  If the apologists for those in power in Washington want to vilify me for that comparison, so be it.

To the American people, it is far beyond time to wake up to who this man in the White House is and what his ambitions are.  As for the Republicans in the Congress or running for office, the task is upon your shoulders to stop Barack Obama in his tracks before he goes any farther.  It is time to do your sworn duty to preserve and protect the country.  And for the Democrats who are so blinded by party loyalty that they would sell their country for the proverbial thirty pieces of silver, the long-term difficulties and potential downfall of the greatest nation on earth will be your legacy.
