Just the latest example of Obama twisting scripture and taking the Lord’s name in vain to justify his unscriptural positions.
President Barack Obama has flip-flopped on gay “marriage” for the second time, endorsing same-sex marriage in an interview today, in which he said his decision was motivated in part by his Christian faith and his belief in the Golden Rule.
“I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told ABC News reporter Robin Roberts in an interview to air this evening.
He added that his wife, Michelle, agreed with him. “We’ve talked about it over the years and she, you know, she feels the same way,” he said.
“We are both practicing Christians and obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others,” Obama stated, “but, you know, when we think about our faith, the thing at root that we think about is, not only Christ sacrificing Himself on our behalf, but it’s also the Golden Rule.”
He explained his foot-dragging reticence to support full same-sex “marriage” by saying he “was sensitive to the fact that, for a lot of people, the word marriage was something that evokes very powerful traditions – religious beliefs and so forth.”
However, Obama had previously implied the Bible supports homosexual unions. “I believe in civil unions that allow a same-sex couple to visit each other in a hospital or transfer property to each other,” he said in 2008. “If people find that controversial, then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans.”
Of course, Obama has been a believer in gay marriage all along. He just didn’t want to say so publicly and alienate his black and hispanic voting base, who overwhelmingly support traditional marriage. He’s been claiming to “evolve” until he decided it was politically expedient to finally come out of the closet with his true position. (Only conservatives “flip-flop,” of course….liberals “evolve.”)
Back in 2004 as a Senate candidate, Obama cited his faith as his reason for opposing same-sex marriage: “I’m a Christian, and so although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman.” He supported same-sex civil unions at the time.
Obama’s announcement will have little to no effect on federal policy, but could have much effect on election-year politics. The president on Wednesday said he still thinks the issue should be worked out at the state level. And he has already done much for gay activists at the federal level: Last year he instructed the Justice Department not to defend the Defense of Marriage Act—a federal law—in court. And when Democrats were in their final days of controlling both chambers of Congress in 2010, they repealed “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,” the military policy prohibiting publicly homosexual service people.
The president’s announcement hardly ruffled a feather among traditional marriage supporters.
“The charade is finally up,” said Gary Bauer, president of American Values, in a statement. “We’ve always known that Barack Obama supports same-sex marriage. With every action he’s taken, from court appointments to his rhetoric, he’s been preparing the way to undermine traditional marriage. Obama’s finally made that support explicit.”
National Organization of Marriage co-founder Maggie Gallagher embraced Obama’s announcement: “Politically, we welcome this. We think it’s a huge mistake.”
Faith and Freedom’s Ralph Reed echoed Gallagher: “This is an unanticipated gift to the Romney campaign.” Reed said the announcement would drive religious voters to the polls in November.
The world economy is on the brink of collapse, we’re being sold into debt slavery to China, and the Muslim world is on the verge of launching WWIII, but Obama wants us focus on contraception, gay marriage, and Trayvon Martin. Seriously. It’s time to wake up.
The Left is doing their best to convince women, blacks, college students, low income voters and the gay community that they are all victims who require the Nanny State to validate and protect them. Dividing Americans against one another is all they’re good at. Then we can’t unite against the Marxist overthrow of our country. When the useful idiots are no longer useful, they’ll be lined up and shot. Don’t believe me? The communists put homosexuals and minorities in concentration camps. The Muslims hang and behead them. THAT’S who will win if the Left succeeds in pulling the wool over voters’ eyes!
